Good character is what gives a young person the best possible chance of success in life.
Currently, third-level colleges are in the process of changing an inadequate points system, and will now look at the personal attributes of students as well as their overall school performance. Top employers in ever-changing workplace environments achieve success through employing young people who show personal qualities and high level social skills, together with the so-called “soft skills”. Future family enrichment for young people depends on them acquiring good personal habits such as sincerity, perseverance and a spirit of service. Therefore, it is no accident that character education is central to what Rockbrook does.
The goal of character education is to help young people to develop good habits that will enable them to flourish intellectually, personally and socially. Good habits, also known as virtues, such as diligence, sincerity, personal accountability, courage and perseverance enable a person to develop better relationships and to work better. It is these virtues which also enable young people to become better students.
Our idyllic location provides a calm, positive and nurturing environment.
The area around Rockrook is a favorite destination for walking, sightseeing and cycling. It is a short distance from the pleasant parkland walks of Marley Park and from the wilder walks in Masseys Wood, Cruagh Wood, Pine Forest and the Hellfire Club. From Rockbrook there are magnificent views of the city and on a clear day you can see as far north as the Mournes, and over to the coast of Wales.
The area is rich with prehistory – as witnessed in the recent excavations of a neolithic passage grave near the Hellfire Club- as well as with history, being near the old military barracks of Stocking Lane, and the Military Road which was built to put down the Irish rebels in 1800. The grounds of the school include a fine example of an early Georgian country house and an 18th century mill, the furthest upstream mill (and only one remaining) on the Owendoher river. The school, with the support of South Dublin County Council, is playing an active role in conserving this local heritage. Students also can enjoy the wonderful pleasure gardens along the Owendoher created by Lady Glenavy in the 1940s.
